Sunlight Reduces Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

Researchers from the University of California School of Medicine at San Diego found that areas with more exposure to UV-B radiation from sunlight have significantly lower rates of pancreatic cancer. The study, published in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, showed that sunny regions had up to six times less pancreatic cancer than cloudier, higher-latitude areas.

According to lead author Dr. Cedric Garland, lack of UV-B exposure means lower natural Vitamin D production, which may lead to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. Globally, about 338,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed each year, making it the seventh most lethal form of cancer.
