🏫 Back to School: 10 Health Tips for a Happier, Healthier Year
As September rolls in and summer fades out, it’s time for kids to head back to school. With that return come new routines, packed schedules—and a fresh wave of germs. But don’t stress! These 10 simple tips can help you keep your child (and your whole family) healthy and happy.
1. Boost Their Immune System
A strong immune system starts with healthy habits. Make sure your child:
-
Eats a balanced diet (fruits, veggies, lean protein, whole grains)
-
Gets plenty of sleep
-
Exercises regularly
-
Manages stress and gets time to play and laugh
-
Washes hands frequently
While some parents choose to support immunity with supplements like elderberry or allicin (garlic extract), consult your pediatrician before adding anything new.
2. Teach Proper Hand Washing
This simple act can stop the spread of countless illnesses. Teach kids to wash hands:
-
Before eating
-
After using the bathroom
-
After blowing their nose or coughing
Use soap, scrub for 20 seconds, and don’t forget between fingers!
3. Practice Healthy Habits
Help your child build smart daily behaviors like:
-
Not touching their face
-
Using tissues when sneezing
-
Avoiding sharing drinks or utensils
-
Telling you if they feel sick
4. Watch for Anxiety & Stress
The school year brings more than just homework—it can bring stress too. Watch for signs like:
-
Trouble sleeping
-
Withdrawal or mood changes
-
Loss of appetite
Help kids understand what they can control (like their actions) vs. what they can’t (others’ behavior), and give them ways to decompress—journaling, nature walks, quiet time, or just talking with you.
5. Establish a Sleep Routine
Sleep is vital for health, learning, and emotional well-being. Set a consistent bedtime and wake-up time—even on weekends. Poor sleep can lead to trouble concentrating, obesity, or even depression.
6. Eat a Healthy Breakfast
Breakfast sets the tone for the day! Regular breakfast eaters get more nutrients, have better focus and energy, and tend to perform better in school. Try:
-
Whole grains, fruit, nut butters
-
Low-sugar cereals
-
Yogurt, eggs, or oatmeal
Tip: Wake up 15 minutes earlier or prep grab-and-go options like trail mix or fruit.
7. Keep Sick Kids Home
If your child is sick, keep them home to rest and recover—and prevent spreading germs. Keep them home if they:
-
Have a fever
-
Vomit or have diarrhea
-
Are too tired or achy to focus
-
Are coughing frequently
-
Show signs of contagious illness
8. Be Like Dracula
Teach kids to cough or sneeze into their elbow—not their hands. It’s a fun reminder (especially during Halloween season) and it keeps germs from spreading.
9. Make Time to Laugh
Laughter really is medicine. It boosts immune function and reduces stress. Tell jokes, watch something funny together, or just be silly. Help your child build resilience through joy.
10. Encourage Outdoor Play
Don’t let screens steal their sunshine! Outdoor time improves mood, encourages exercise, and strengthens the immune system. Join your kids for a bike ride, game of tag, or nature walk.
