Thyroid Awareness Month – My Journey to Healing

This month is Thyroid Awareness Month. But what is the thyroid? It’s a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck, just below the Adam’s apple. Brownish-red and rich in blood vessels, the thyroid plays a vital role in regulating metabolism, growth, development, and body temperature by secreting key hormones.

I had heard of the thyroid before, but didn’t understand its importance—until I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

Though I had been vegan since 2012 and led an active lifestyle, by 2015 I noticed something was off. My stamina declined, I gained weight around my middle, my sleep became disrupted, and symptoms like hoarseness, dry skin, joint pain, and thinning hair crept in.

After struggling through a trade show and feeling exhausted after short walks, I visited my doctor. Comprehensive blood and urine tests revealed low testosterone and progesterone, high cortisol, and prediabetes. The root of it all? Hypothyroidism.

What is Hypothyroidism?

It’s a condition where the thyroid doesn’t produce enough essential hormones. These hormones regulate major bodily functions—like metabolism, digestion, heart rate, and body temperature. When they’re lacking, symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, and sluggishness arise. That explained my experience perfectly.

After trying several medications and natural options, I found success with a balanced approach: a natural thyroid prescription, targeted supplements, and a focused, whole-foods-based diet.

Within six months, I had lost 30 pounds, regained energy, and resumed a regular gym routine and DDPYoga. My body responded beautifully.

🥗 Natural Foods I Added for Thyroid Support:

  • Seaweed – A rich source of iodine, essential for producing thyroid hormones. I enjoy seaweed salad or make veggie rolls at home. I also take a liquid iodine supplement in my tea.

  • Brazil Nuts – High in selenium and zinc, which support thyroid hormone production.

  • Berries (like Blueberries) – Packed with antioxidants to help counteract free radicals, which may be elevated in hypothyroid conditions.

  • Olive Oil – A healthy fat that supports metabolism and weight regulation. I use only organic, non-GMO extra virgin olive oil.

  • Lentils – A great plant-based protein and iron source. Iron is crucial for optimal thyroid function.

  • Garlic – Supports blood sugar, reduces inflammation, and may combat the Epstein-Barr virus, which has links to thyroid dysfunction. I also use Allimax, a supplement rich in allicin (garlic extract).

  • Green Juices/Smoothies – I started juicing greens and fruits like kale, spinach, berries, cucumber, and carrots. The nutrient boost has helped my energy, skin, and overall well-being.

Final Thoughts:

Do your research, talk with your doctor, and explore natural and medical options to support your thyroid health. Nature often holds the key to healing—if we listen.
