Get Your Hands Dirty – It’s Gardening Season!
At last, the warm weather has arrived—and you know what that means? It’s time to get outdoors, get your hands dirty, and start planning and prepping your edible garden! Whether you have a designated garden area or a few bare spots in your flowerbeds, there’s always room for one more edible plant.
Here are a few ideas to help get you started:
-
Clean up the beds: Clear out debris and weeds. Prune nearby plants to allow more sunlight for new growth.
-
Compost: Add a few inches of nutrient-rich compost to enrich soil and provide a slow release of nutrients.
-
Have a plan in hand: Keep a diagram and record of past and future plantings. Rotating crops helps prevent disease and fungus, especially for tomatoes.
-
Plant an edible landscape: Mix herbs and veggies into your flowerbeds—think rosemary, chives, strawberries, and even asparagus.
-
Try something new: Consider unique plants like lemongrass or even grow basics like garlic, carrots, and onions for the first time.
-
Grow vertically: Maximize space by trellising cucumbers or zucchini and increasing light exposure at the soil level.

Whether you’re working with large garden beds, potted plants, or a few open patches, it’s the perfect time to involve the whole family in growing fresh, nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables, and herbs right outside your door. Nothing is fresher—or more rewarding—than food straight from your own garden.
